Weird place especially at night, very creepy. A pregnant girl was murdered there in the 60's, I used to walk to work and cut through some of the forest there where the old rail line was. There are three cemeteries on the grounds of Tewksbury Hospital with at least 10,000 graves in them. Tewksbury Hospital opened in 1854 and its cemetery directory dates back to 1891 and contains 9,342 names. Patients who died between 1854 and 1891 are not recorded, so the total number of graves is not known. The grave markers, three-inch high metal circles with crosses in the middle, are rusted and easy to miss because of the overgrowth of weeds. Although on occasion community groups have done some clearing of overgrowth in the cemeteries, the hospital has no money in its budget for regular maint... Once known as the New Center Cemetery it is one of the oldest in town, the oldest being the old center cemetery, a small plot across the street dating to the early 1700's. Odd lights and shadows have been reported here and I've heard of more than one story about voices.
Headlights and the condos behind it could explain some of the lights. The old section to the left is full of town history and the old center cemetery across the street is perhaps the least visited. Many people have told me they knew it was there but somehow paid it no mind. I've gotten the feeling of intruding on a private space or being an unwelcome guest. There is a funeral parlor on the corner and two more old buildings that i was told have been used as such in the past, on Lee st.

The old hospital and grounds were once a terminal hospital around the turn of the 20th century. The buildings are old and though most are used today, they are well haunted. There are also tunnels connecting many of them that have been sealed off. The grounds around the hospital used to have many farmhouses for people who worked the fields ad the hospital was fairly self sufficient then. The pauper grave is just down east st in the tall pine forest. Anne Sullivan (Helen Keller's teacher) once stayed here at the hospital. Today there are state services run out of some of the buildings including rehab for drug abuse and halfway houses for various reasons. The newer hospital building is still a creepy place as it houses the terminally ill or those who need instituionalized care. Keep away from the buildings as there is security here. at the top of the hill is the old Ames Estate which was recently used as an old folks home. Not sure of its current use. Nearby the top is an old well with a cement structure above. The field that was downslope from there was always strange in feeling, the tower, creepy. About halfway up catamount there used to be a dirt road that connected with Kendal Road and near Kendall was a small plot with the ames family cemetery. Today there is an extension of catamount down the other side of the hill and I'm not sure it will do so well. The hill has many legends to it the most believable is that there used to be a native settlement near what is now ames pond (man made) and the hill was sacred to them. The north side behind the houses on North st and Metlife side has always creeped out the kids who use to adventure there. My best friend and I (both in our late 30`s) saw an apparition of a woman in a nightgown on Livingston Street back in the summer of 1998, just before the state hospital. We thought she was real at first and perhaps a runaway patient at the Tewksbury State hospital, until she disappeared before our eyes. We were a bit unnerved by what we saw, so we pulled over to the side of the road for a moment, to see if she would appear again and gather our thoughts. Our luck, a cop came by and stopped to see if we were ok. Of course, we didn`t tell him why we were pulled over, just said we thought our car was overheating but that we felt it was ok to get us home, lol. He offered to follow us home to make sure we got there safely, but my friend and I insisted we would be ok. I know he didn`t believe our story about the car overheating, but he didn`t question us and let us go, smirking.

There are plenty of reports of doors opening and closing on their own, strange noises, and moving objects. Many sightings have occurred late at night near the cafeteria, formerly the gym. This is caused by the lingering spirit of a cheerleader who died during a competition. There is a cheerleading award named after her as well. In the Dhall corridor, the heating pipes move spontaneously, and make quite a ruckus. In the cemetery at night, there is a ghost of a woman who walks around the part of cemetery closest to the center of town. In addition, deep in the cemetery, there is a creature (probably never human) with dark leathery skin who will follow you as you walk through the cemetery. East Street runs through the cemetery.
