UPDATE

A local researcher has found out that there never was an orphanage anywhere in the area. So what is causing these lights? Perhaps a mining accident at the Harmar Mine. In 1918, 8 miners were killed at the Harmar Mine which was located near the area. This is my current theory as to why this place is haunted.

On Cambells Run Road, at the sharp left bend, lights were seen that would fly around. These lights are bright white and blink in a rapid 3 or 4 pulse then pause.

A little further up the road, right near the next left bend, a group of the same lights were seen. Most were back in the little field, but some flew near the road and above the car.

Note: These were seen in the year 2000, before the road was blocked off to cars, and generally around 1am. You may want to get permission from the local police if you plan to go, just in case. It is said too that the road was closed because it hasn't been maintained and is dangerous, so be very careful!

I can understand lightening bugs, but they don`t produce a white light. A lightening bug (from my experience) produce a greenish blueish light.... I suppose it depends on how you percieve colors aswell.... Interesting.

Back in 2000, I lived in Pittsburgh and had a friend who lived in that town. We went for a few weeks to see the ghosts there and after a few times we saw them. We went for about 6 weeks in a row, once a week, and even brought other friends who all saw them. They are most definitly NOT fireflies. And I must say that anyone who says they are have not gone and seen them. I dont think there is anyone who could confuse the two.

I don't know how any of these commenters got close enough to see the lights. I have been told by close friends and family that know exactly where the orphanage (SHOULD) be that the road has been blocked off for years and the orphanage itself torn down many years before that.

I made the comment above yours. Back then, the road was not blocked as it is now. I didnt even know they did block it off until I looked at street view on google maps. I was quite surprised to see it blocked but with all the trash dumping at the first sharp bend there and kids doing whatever back there, I can see why they would.

Personally, I would just stick to the road.  When I first went (before it was blocked off of course) we would enter from the south side, which is closest to 28.  We would sit at the first sharp bend and after a couple times with nothing we got to see the light fly around.

After taking our friends, we all noticed that a little ways up the road is a field (thats apparently where the Orphanage was) and it was filled with the same lights. Maybe a dozen or more. Some flew twords the car and above it, others just stayed back in the field.

We always went about 1am and on the same day of the week, once a week. So if you want to see the lights, pick a time like that and keep at it. There is activity there for sure.

I also might have seen one of the other haunts in that locations, called the 3 hunters. They appear as large orbs that float through the woods. In that same first sharp bend, before we saw the other lights, I thought I saw car lights coming down the road (that first bend turns back on itself as you can see on the google map) so we took off thinking it might be a cop. Needless to say we didnt pass any other car. Since we didnt stay long, I wont say im 100% sure I saw the large orb, but its a good chance thats what it was.

Who doesn't get an eerie feeling in the middle of the woods at midnight? I was just there last night, brought candy, baby powder, and little dead children feet, and nothing happened. But I did see Bigfoot...

I doubt that the roadblocks would have been removed.  I would not be afraid of anything though, except maybe the local cops running you off. :)

Take a few friends with you, take a video camera for sure! But I wouldnt take anything like beer or whatever just in case the cops do show up. If you have a camera (even a reg digital camera should have some video option) and nothing illegal, they would probably just ask you to leave. Could always ask for permission to go back to do a study, never know. :)

Either way, let us know how it goes.

My only few suggestions are this:

Since the road is closed off, you may want to ask the local police for permission. Tell them what you are doing, say its research for a school project, whatever.

You probably wont see anything the first night. Pick a time (say 1am) and keep going back on the same day every week. This is what a friend of mine and me did until we finally starting seeing the orbs. It kinda seems like they are shy. :)

BRING A CAMERA!!!!  A low light type that used IR would be best, but even a semi decent camera should pick up bright flashing lights flying around. If you do catch something, upload it to a website or FTP so others can view it. Also, the TAPS (Ghost Hunters from Sci-Fi) website has a forum where people can share their videos and pictures.

Lastly, start at the first sharp bend (coming in from Guys Run Rd), hang out there for maybe 15-30 mins (or more if you dont want to head too far from your car), from there head up the road a bit until the first small field. That is supposedly where the orphanage was, and where friends and myself saw a group of the orbs flying around.

Ok, first they have a gate a little bit past the last house on Campbell Run Road, then up the road to where the other gate is they have the road blocked with jersey barriers, right before the real sharp bend. So where did you see activity, between the last house and the sharp bend, or past the sharp bend heading up to Old Indian Trail Road.

My friend and I would drive to the sharp bend and park the car. (Note: This was before the barricades)  The first few times we didn't see anything, which is why I suggest to keep going back. When we did, it was the small light that blinks and flies around. After a few times going and seeing it, we brought friends along to see them. It was then that we stopped at a small field, presumably where the Orphange used to be, and saw a group of them flying around.

Its hard to see on the google map, but it looks like it might have been right before the second bend to the left (coming from the sharp bend). In any case, you can start at the sharp bend, just go there until you do see the light (or lights, we did start seeing two) and then you can head further up the road and maybe see the group. I would advise against going into the field since there may be a well or other hazards hidden.

So your sayin you saw stuff down by the sharp bend and that pond, or whatever it is, and not down by the houses? And if you look on google map a little past the houses up in the woods on the left side, what is that big brown rectangular shape with black dots, I thought maybe thats where the orphange was?

At the sharp bend, you can see a path leading north. While your there at the bend looking that direction, you will notice that the left side is a hill. In fact, the road climbs rather steeply just after you go around the bend.  We would park at the bend pretty much facing north, or facing that path. (not that it was really much of a path since it was all high grass and brush at the time) Its there that we first saw the lights.

Honestly, I couldnt tell you where the orphanage really was, I can only tell you what we saw and where we saw it. And where we think the orphanage might have been, simply because of the group of lights, was further up from the bend, on the right, either just before or near that next bend to the left.

If you really want to know, head over to the library and see if you cant find some information on it. Im sure if it burned down and people died, it would have been in a paper somewhere.

Cant hurt, dont have to tell them when you plan to go. :)

Really though, I would think that if you came in and spoke to them in a professional manner, have a camera with you, and if you are younger give them your parents information.

Also, I emailed the Library there in Oakmont asking if someone could look into the stories (orphanage, hunters and miners) and I got a reply from a woman who said she would look into it. If you ask the cops for permission and they dont just outright say "Hell no", I can ask her to help in that regard. I really do hope you can get there and catch something, cause as much as I would love to go back, Im a bit far away here in Tenn.

i went there today and just walked to the barricade on Old Indian Trail. i want to walk the trail and see lights...but like everyone said, the cops are an issue. why isn't this better documented? why can't i find video, or better pictures. and why can't i find information on an orphanage there? seems to me this would be a good place for the ghost adventures crew to check out.

Re-read the top of the page. I asked a local Librarian to do some research and they can find NO history of any orphanage. So as of right now, we can only surmise the lights, if they are ghosts (which at the very least they ARE paranormal) would be from various deaths contributed to the coal mine nearby.

And the closing of the road is supposedly due to the lack of maintenence and as such is considered unsafe. While that may be true, I would also think it had to do with trash dumping and kids doing whatever there. If the barricade isnt far (like within sight) of the sharp bend in the road, then I wouldnt think it should be such a big deal to be there. But thats just me. If your concerned about the police, go ask. It cant hurt.

Lastly; Ghost Adventures? That is probably the worst show about the paranormal. Now a team from TAPS (on the show or not) would be the better way to go.

Normally, I'd say "What's wrong with having 13 girls?" but the work involved not to get caught isn't worth it.

Just curious...are these lights in any way reflections or shining from either the businesses along Freeport Rd. or from the PPG Plant on top of the hill along Guy's Run Rd.?

Very simple answer. No. Imagine the light as described (white, rapid 3-4 blinks and short pause) appearing above the treeline perhaps 100 yards or more away, swooping around some perhaps like a bird or insect, heading for your car. Then proceeding to fly around your car for several minutes. This happened on perhaps the 4th visit in a row seeing the light each week, when my car had 5 people in it to witness. So truly, unless this is some uber rare lightning bug that has yet to be documented, it is something paranormal. Wether it's ghosts of people who died in coal mining shafts in the area or something else, I do not know. What I do know is that it's very cool to see, and hopefully someone can catch it on camera. :)

Thanks for responding to my question.  To be honest, I am very skeptical of the Harmarville 13 Bends.  Nobody has provided documented proof of any mining accidents that occurred in this area.  I figured that Harmar Twp. closed Campbells Run Rd. due to the amount of attention it garners from teenagers and ghost hunters.  And since nobody has yet to capture one of these orbs on camera, I need more convincing first.

As for the 13 Bends in Coulter/Coultersville, an orphanage retreat home DID exist there in the late 1800's thru the early 1900's.  Documentation can be found of its existance and former exact location.  The only thing I cannot find, so far, is when, according to legend, the fire that supposedly burnt the house down.  I posted some photos I took there during the daytime hours.  It's just an empty lot today, with a small church and cemetery next door.  That lot is private property, though.

Here you go darker, proof of the mining accident. http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/allharmar.html There was also a large mining accident of 184 men being killed a few miles away in the Harwick Mine, but that site is a few miles away. This one says it was along Guys Run Road, which is right next to Campbells Run Road. It is just a theory, but its better than a non-exsistant orphange. I learned of the reason of the road being closed by a person who worked at the Oakdale Library. I emailed and asked if they could look into the orphanage tale, to which I was told there was never one there. She said that the road was closed because it was deemed unsafe. However, I do agree with you that I would bet that the trash dumping that went on and just being hard to patrol played a large part in that.

That's a great site to find very hard historical information.  I appreciate it.  I'll have to check it out this weekend.  What confuses so many people is that there are two "13 Bends" in Allegheny County.  Harmarville boasts Campbells Run Rd. with this mining accident, and Coulter(sville) boasts Coultersville Rd./Tourman St. orphanage summer retreat home.  I should use that site to find any info on some other sites.  The Coulters orphan home and Hell Tunnel in Cecil/Peters Twps.  Supposedly there was an accident in what is known as Bell's Tunnel somewhere in the late 1800's.  So far I haven't located any proof of that occurrence.  Again, thanks for the link.

I only lived in Pittsburgh for a couple years and went to this place because I knew someone from the area and he told me about it. I never heard of it referred to as "13 bends" at all, nor can I see how it would be called that since there are only like 4 bends. :P Ah well, hopefully someone will be lucky enough to catch this on camera someday.

I'm a life-long Pittsburgher from the South Hills area.  There's a lot of folklore, legend, and reputed haunts around western PA.  I know about many of them, and still finding new ones, thanks to sites like this.  For the ones I know about, I like to check them out and post any corrections for people; give the best information that I can.  There's a couple I know of that aren't listed here yet.  I had some problems submitting them for some reason.  I definitely would love to see pics of this site.  I posted pics for the other 13 Bends, Stringtown Station (Elizabeth), and Moundsville State Pen in WV.  I need to take some pics for a couple other sites, such as the Hell Tunnel, Green Man's Tunnel, and the PA Reform School at Morganza.
