Location Description:

Many of these soldiers who died were buried in the prison cemetery and it is here that the "Lady in Gray" still walks and leaves gifts of flowers behind usually on the grave of a unknown soldier. She is said to be a young woman who wears a gray suit in the style of the Civil War era. She walks through the cemetery with her head bowed and appears to be weeping. She has been seen walking directly through trees and through the iron cemetery gates. In the summer of 1988, during a Civil War reenactment, many of the people present heard the sounds of a woman crying. There was no woman present but the weeping sounds were unmistakable. It was believed to have been Lady in Gray, still grieving over the loss of some forgotten soldier.

I have been to this site several times and it does have a very tangible draw to it. I just wanted to let prospective history buffs and/or ghost enthusists know that the part of town that this cemetery is located in is not the best neighborhood. I have lived on the West side of Columbus for a very long time, and this area is known for a high rate of crime. I would not suggest that you go at night, or alone. On a positive note, I have had much luck everytime I have went, with parking my car at the local pizza place a few hundred feet away, on the same side of the road as the cemetery. The Massie's Pizza parking lot is a tow zone, so be sure to park your car out of the way (not where customers would park for convenience), and simply walk in and ask the manager if you can leave your car there while you go and check out the cemetery. They have always been real nice and have never told me no. You will also see some graffiti in the cemetery near a small stone/cement stage that they use for memorial ceremonies and re-enactments, and I can't say enough how wrong I think this is. Please, this isn't just a cemetery, it's a cemetery of our AMERICAN soldiers. To desecrate this location would be a tragedy. Please, it has sat in this location for more than 140 years; let's leave it clean and tidy for others to enjoy for another 140 years to come :) GOOD LUCK ON YOUR GHOST ADVENTURE!!
