Location Description:         
 

An abandoned and forgotten Cemetery. Driving over the bridge on South Church Street near Middle Tennessee blvd. it may appear to look like a field. The grass is about 4 feet tall and many weeds have wrapped themselves around the graves. It is also known as "Benevolent Cemetery", however, the sign (which was on the ground broken in half upon our arrival) reads "Benevolence Cemetery". 




If you choose to visit this Cemetery, please be respectful. Many of the graves here have suffered enough damage from nature itself due to the lack of care from the town...

WELL HERE HERE IS THE 411 ON THE "Benevolance Cemetery"... THERE IS A TOTAL OF ABOUT 350 GRAVES THERE SO BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU WALK THE CEMETERY HAS NOT BE FORGOTTEN, A CHURCH OWNS IT AN CAN NOT AFORD TO KEEP IT UP AS OF RIGHT NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO DO THINGS TO IMPROVE IT THE THE CEMETERY IS OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OLD AN ALOT OF MURFREESBOROS PAST LAYS THERE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS A LITTLE RESEARCH ON IT AN YOU'LL FIND OUT ITS A AFRICAN-AMERICAN CEMETERY MOST OF THE GRAVES ARE FAMILY PLOTS.

Over the Summer, we actually tried to contact the church hoping to get permission to fix it up a little. We had to go through someone in The Murfreesboro Post to find out who owns it. It was a guy who was part of a church. We called dozens of times, the phone rang and rang, no answer...

I FOUND THE THE NAME AN ADD OF THE CHURCH ON THE COMPUTER WITH NO PROBLEMS AN I RAN INTO A MAN THERE JUST BEFORE DARK LAST NIGHT THAT TOLD ME HE PAID FOR LAWN CARE FOR A YEAR THERE TO CLEAN IT UP HE TOLD ME THAT THE FIRST TIME RAN 250 THEN EVERY TIME THEY CAME BACK IT WAS 150 HE SAID HE HAD TO STOP BECAUSE IT WAS TO MUCH OUT OF POCKET IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THERE IS STILL ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT KNOWS OF THIS PLACE AN WOULD LIKE TO HELP FIX IT OR EVEN DONATE TO GET HELP WITH IT BUT THE BAD THING ABOUT IT IS THAT IF ANYONE CAN GET IT CLEANED UP THE CHURCH WILL NOT EVEN HELP TO KEEP IT UP AN NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT THE CITY OF M'BORO WILL FINE SOMEONE FOR LETTING THERE GRASS GROW TO HIGH BUT M'BORO WILL LET THIS CHURCH GET AWAY WITH THIS I MEAN HELL ITS REALLY SAD THERE IS SUNK IN GRAVES SOME OF THEM HAS BEEN DUG UP BY ANIMALS THERE ARE BROKE A BUSTED UP STONES AN SOME EVEN HAS BEEN MOVED OR STOLEN THERE IS ALOT OF UNMARKED GRAVES I'VE READ THAT THERE IS ABOUT 350 OF THEM AN FROM WHAT I COULD FIND THEIR IS ONLY AROUND 100 OR SO STONES MOST OF THE BIG ONES ARE MISSING PARTS AN IF THEY HAD BROKE FROM OLD AGE THEY WOULD BE NEAR BY BUT THATS NOT THE CASE. I GUESS THATS A NUFF OF MY RAVEING BUT IN THE PASS FEW DAYS I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS PLACE AN ONCE YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS CEMETERY THE MORE YOU WILL BE ASHAMED TO LIVE IN M'BORO BECAUSE OF HOW THIS TOWN HAS LET IT FALL INTO SUCH BAD SHAPE IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE SOON THERE WILL NOT BE MUCH OF ANYTHING LEFT TO SAVE I KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS AN I KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.. AN PEOPLE THINK THIS PLACE IS HAUNTED WELL I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT THAT BUT I WOULD RATHER SAY THIS IS ALOT OF SOULS THAT ARE NOT AT PEACE BECAUSE THIS PLACE IS NO LONGER THE PLACE THEY WHERE LAID TO REST IN..............

Well, tell that guy he could have had it done for free if only he answered the phone over the summer. And you're right, the souls are not at peace.
Look what the Cemetery is surrounded by, on one side there are storage units where some local bands rehearse, one side a bridge with frequent traffic and the homeless residing underneath. The graffiti indicates possible gang activity, and I would say possible cult activity from the candles I found within. And of course the condition it is in. I would be one pi$$ed off spirit too...

I had the local news do a story on this cemetary 2 years ago. The public was outraged and offered their help but the church that owns it refused to ;let us do anything. and to set the records straight , it is not an African American cemetary but most of the graves are poupper graves. However there are several veterans buried there also. None the less every person buried there deserves more respect as do their families who can't even find their graves. I have just contacted the reporter that did the story with me 2 years ago to try to again get something done. I have also contavted several national news channels to try to get even more attention. If the church can not afford to keep it up then give it up and let someone else
