Location Description:

The old hospital and grounds were once a terminal hospital around the turn of the 20th century. The buildings are old and though most are used today, they are well haunted. There are also tunnels connecting many of them that have been sealed off. The grounds around the hospital used to have many farmhouses for people who worked the fields ad the hospital was fairly self sufficient then. The pauper grave is just down east st in the tall pine forest. Anne Sullivan (Helen Keller's teacher) once stayed here at the hospital. Today there are state services run out of some of the buildings including rehab for drug abuse and halfway houses for various reasons. The newer hospital building is still a creepy place as it houses the terminally ill or those who need instituionalized care. Keep away from the buildings as there is security here. The fields are easily accessed as are the woods where there is still alot of paranormal activity to experience. A few of the old farmhouses still stand but dont go in them as they are dangerously rotted. Being near them should give you what you are looking for.

AnonymousVisiter B -	Disclaimer: Stay away from the grounds as they are vigorously by state and local police. When I was younger, my friends and I managed to get inside one of the old farm houses that is still standing. Coincidentally one of my old principals' used to live in the house, as his father was a doctor at the hospital. In the basement there are brick entrances to the tunnels, which have since been sealed off. Since we did not want to destroy state property, we left them as they were, and cautiously left. Definitely creepy though.

AnonymousVisiter	I was driving through the grounds with my father a few weeks ago, as I live in Tewksbury and was on my way home from work in Burlington, and this was a shortcut. It was about 10:30 at night and nobody was around except the people in the buildings. My dad had just had his car washed. There was a jolt to the side of the car and it sounded as if somebody had run up and kicked the door. We turned to look, and sure enough, there was a huge arm print with a fist where the hand was supposed to be on his back driver side window and another forearm and hand print on the window frame. He got out to look, and when he touched the mark, it was still oily.

AnonymousVisiter S -	actually it was anne sullivan, helen keller's teacher, who was legally blind herself, who lived at the state hospital. i believe in the center of town there is a small statue by the town hall for her but i may be wrong on the statue . however, i agree the old farm houses are very creepy i live near one other than the occasional kid trying to get in i never saw or heard anything many stories about ghosts at the hospital have been around for a long time those i believe

At the town hall is a statue of them both, it is next to the town hall on the main street side. Made by Mikos Kaufman, I believe is the correct name, a famous sculptor who lived in the town, contributed many sculptures to the town and was internationally known.

AnonymousVisiter N US	I read in some articles a few years ago that there are about 10,000 people buried in the pine forest cemetery. There is a sign marking the Tewksbury Hospital Cemetery on the south side of East Street. Before these articles came out, the cemetery was not marked with a sign; the appearance of the signage may be co-incidental. If you look into the forest, you may see small metal markers; the person who sparked the interest used to use her lunch break to spray paint as many of the markers as she could, because they are sinking into the bracken and needles on the forest floor. 10,000 sounds like a lot, but when you remember that the facility was open for about 100 years, and it was first a "poor farm" or almshouse, and then later a hospital, that is only 100 people per year. Anne Sullivan had to leave her younger brother behind when she left Tewksbury Hospital to go work with Helen Keller; he was ill, and I imagine it is likely that he is buried in the pine forest.

AnonymousVisiter S -	I walked through the cemetery in the woods today, got evp there too of a man telling me to "go away". There was so much snow I could not see anything but snow and trees; I was only about 60 feet in from East Road and basically walked from one side to the other in 15-25 inches of snow. Awesomely creepy woods. Since I had no idea how many were buried there or where they were I excused my self beforehand if I happened to be stepping on anyone.

AnonymousVisiter B -	Warning to all... the state and local police monitor the grounds constantly. Do not get caught trespassing as the consequences are harsh. Massachusetts laws on the grounds are very strict as there are mentally incapacitated people living there. Believe me when I tell you, coming across one of these patients would not be a great experience.

AnonymousVisiter ** -	i work at the state hospital and the patients in the mental part that are the ones to worry about are not aloud off thier floors and the security is pretty good cuz i have not seen any and i have not seen or heard any ghosts either but i do belive the hospital is huanted i have heard stories i think the only thing you have to worry about is the security that watches the grounds an the tewksbury police do patrol the grounds too

I didn't know anything about the place, but as soon as we turned into the parking lot, i started to feel uneasy. Once we walked into the MassHealth building, i noticed small "offices" with hinges still on the doors and the front desk looked like it used to be a nurse's station where they distributed medication. I also saw another building where there is a daycare and thought how i would never send my child there (if i had one). This is when I knew I needed to come home and check out the internet and see if I could find something out about this place....all I have to say is CREEP-Y!

AnonymousVisiter ** US	The previous post's are correct regarding the security in the hospital and on the grounds . Not to mention the privacy of the paitience living there. When i was a teenager we rode our bicycles through the tunnels.There were once barber shops and bakery's and other shops down there . There were also cells . In the 1960's it was a fallout shelter . I took blueprint reading in high school and the school had a blueprint of the tunnel network of the entire grounds. It was dated the 1800's if i remember correctly . To enter the tunnels you had to enter one of the buildings, i wont tell you the building because i recommend you dont go there. We were chased out of there by two very pissed off orderly's . They were the security back in the mid 70's.I can honestly tell you the only ghost's i had seen that day were my friends faces as we were chased of the grounds.

AnonymousVisiter	I worked at the hospital for 3 years as a mental health worker. The mental health wards are on the upper levels of the newer bldg. (Saunders) They are locked wards. The extreme patients are on the top floor in a double locked ward. You would have to pass through the first door and wait for it to lock before being able to buzz in for the interior door. The patients that have privileges to go outside and smoke, do so in an interior courtyard with access from an interior elevator and are at all times escorted by highly trained staff members. the less risk patients still eat at the cafeteria on the grounds and are also supervised going to , while they eat and coming back to their wards. For the other patients on these wards, the cafeteria is off limits. The kitchen staff uses the tunnel system (that does still exist) to bring them their meals. All of the buildings and abandoned houses on Livingston street are connected. some of the entrances are bricked off , but all the tunnels are still there. The ones that are not in use are utilized for storage of old wheelchairs, beds, medical apparatus and things of that nature. The tunnel that connects to Saunders is newer and very well lit. The others are creepy old brick tunnels that are not so well lit. I have stayed past my shifts on many, many occasions to tour these tunnels as well as the entire site. Believe me this place is HAUNTED. I have personally seen shadow figures no taller than a toddler run by at top speed into places where doors used to be. I've seen mists form from nowhere and then disperse. I have heard voices on a nightly basis and footsteps. I have seen full size apparitions from ten feet away. I have had cold bursts off air blast right through me on dozens of occasions while my hair was standing on end. The last week I had the best encounter of my life. I was to meet the food staff member at the elevator in the basement for a late arrivals (transfer from Bridgewater State) tray. It was 11:45pm. I got tired of waiting for them to reheat the old nasty food and bring it to me. I started walking towards the cafeteria and it suddenly got extremely cold. Like winter cold! I started hearing a shuffling from ahead. I stopped, The shuffling was getting closer but I couldn't see anything. There was nothing but tunnel in from of me. The shuffling stopped abruptly and it became Silent (Really Really quiet) Then I felt the air of these words hit me in the face. "WHERE IS AGNUS" I have never been so afraid in my life. I couldn't move. I wanted to run, I think I even tried , but I was frozen. I saw the food service worker coming towards me. He got to me and asked me what was wrong. I told him and he just shook his head and laughed like I was telling a joke. He handed me the tray and said, if I ever found Agnus to tell her the tunnels are for workers only. He walked away and I walked back to the elevator still scared to death. I didn't tell anyone upstairs. I tried to look up old records of the hospital and of the deceased, but those records are so hard to find. I still live in town. I no longer work for the State but, I can say that Tewksury State Hospital is a haunted site...

I was walking the grounds near the old cemetery about 15 years ago when an old man screamed at me to get out of here I saw the man and then he walked about ten feet and was gone. I was scared as ever but explored further to try and find the guy who seemingly disappeared. I left with a strange feeling of despair that stayed with me for a few hours. Odd, creepy and definitely scary.

AnonymousVisiter ** US	I have went to this hospital for clinical rotations, getting there at 5:30AM in the winter, and it was incredibly creepy. I went to the ladies room alone and just felt soo not alone, so I ran out and so I asked a friend to come in with me. It had a very haunted feeling there in the hospital. I was pretty scared if I ever I had to walk around the hospital alone so I always asked a friend to accompany me. I think it is a really interesting part of history. I am not a 100% sure, but I believe that the old day care there is named after Anne B. Sullivan. When Danvers state got closed, some of those patients were transfered there and are on that locked floor some one was mentioning. It was definitely haunted, but I really enjoyed working there, I hope one day they are hiring and I get a job there.

AnonymousVisiter	I was recently a patient at CAB Tewksbury located in the Nichols building at the state hospital.Upon arriving, I was told stories of the place being haunted,which I quickly shrugged off.On about the fifth day of my stay at 1:30 am, I was awoken by the sound of shuffling feet in my room(west 8 ).I turned toward the door where i saw an old man,kinda hunched over with a cane in his left just looking in the room. I rubbed my eyes to make sure I saw what I thought I saw,I did! I started to say,what are you doing in here repeatedly,with no response. My talking had woken one of my roomates and he asked what was wrong. I turned him to ask him if he saw the old man(he didn't),when i turned back the man was gone.I told myself that I must be dreaming and went back to sleep. When I woke later that morning, my roommate said "what was that all about last night" that's when I knew it wasn't a dream after all..I saw that old man,Creepy!!! The following week a new patient was spending his first night at the Nichols building,and during morning smoke break he describe someone he had seen in his room early that morning..it was the same old man that he described to a "T".Coincidence..I think NOT. If anyone who has ever stayed in the Nichols building and had a similar experience, I would love to hear about it.

AnonymousVisiter	i just left cab nichols building today, they took away the smoking on the grounds so we were going up in the attic to smoke as i was sitting there with someone we started talking about how creepy it was and how many people died or killed in the nichols building alone i then asked if there was anyone who would like to make there presence known about three seconds we heard four bangs like someone was walking on the metal beams and stopped that was enough for us and we bounced pretty weird. but there is also an article that was in the lowell sun i believe on the history of the nichols building its pretty strange does anyone have a link or a copy they could post??

I have seen shadows, voices, footsteps and cold breezes when investigating the tunnels... The John J Nichols building has always been a place to see spirits as a matter of fact one Sunday afternoon years ago I saw a blue shining mist appear down in the basement where everyone eats it came thru the wall from the back of the building & went right out the window toward the employee parking lot. About twenty years ago me and a co worker crawled thru a window & investigated the old chapel when knowbody was there... We popped a lock and went right to the top of the steeple then pushed the door open and I stepped outside it was so frigin high It is funny because when you look at it it doesn't seem that high but I could see all of Tewksbury !!Good place to watch a ball game on the East street feild. The weird thing that happened that day was unexplained footsteps and as my friend took a turn standing outside on the steeple I looked at the door to the steeple & somebody had carved their name and left the full date and it was exactly to the day 100 years prior... Here is a laugh for ya !! I am doing a paranormal investigation there tomorrow with my new digital recorder !! Hopefully I can get some documented EVP'S

Spirit Seeker Last Seen: 2/10/2010 3:58:58 PM	Actually, I had a good Investigation at the Hospital on Sunday 1/17/10 !! I found the Pine Cemetary and took some cool pics I put one on my profile of grave # 154 and did an EVP session and asked if the person who was at grave # 154 could give me their name as I was touching the grave plaque but got not response but the howling of the wind... It actually felt really peaceful out there it was about 38 degrees that day so if I was being touched I might not have noticed it... I also went down to an old abandoned tunnel and took some pics and asked if anyone wanted to comunicate that was exhilerating because when you speak in this tunnel it has an Echoooooooooo...I also asked if Agnus was there to come and speak with me but never heard a peep just a distant echo... I have a pic in the tunnel of a shadow figure but I need it to be enhanced so I can truly see what I documented that day... As I do investigations at this site I will post what I encountered because I know there have been alot of people saying that they have had encounters but I don't think any of them were bold enough top do an investigation on their own !! AnonymousVisiter	I lived at Tewksbury State Hospital for almost 2yrs. When I was there they were starting the prosess to be a smoke free hospital. Pretty much all of the other patients and me where discusing how all of us were going to be and act crazy more than we were if they were really going to stop smoking not just for the psych. patients but for the DPH and staff and ground monators and security staff (poliece).I have been out a little more than 2yrs and I guess it really happend. I have sympothy for the patients, staff and who ever works there. It is a little haunted there me and my B.f opend the door to were I guess the morgue was and we got a little nervous, we went to go out side and right when we opend the door it was so windy and snowing really bad I was freakin out andwe went in to the social club room and the wind just stoped and the snow stop. What I really think is who ever died and went down there are just telling me and others they want to rest in piece.

AnonymousVisiter VIRGINIA US	My Grandmother was in the hospital 40 years ago and I use to go visit her all the time. My dad worked in the barns on 3rd shift about 30 years ago and I would go visit him at night. I have never seen anything scary there. I have also been in the woods there walking with my dogs and we came upon all the markers, again, there was nothing scary there. I did hear all the scary stories of the patients when I was young but have never experienced anything scary in all the times I was there. I think people's imaginations get the best of them at times, that's all

AnonymousVisiter	i lived on the grounds for two yaers as a patient noticing a lot of creepy and dark shadows in the hall when I used to get snacks. To this day it still creeps me outknowing that thousands of people were tortured and some died there. Go there at your own risk.

AnonymousVisiter	I worked in the Nichols building for 9 years. I personally experienced many incidents of ghosts. There was a little boy who rides a tricycle across the 2nd floor at night. One experience I had was late at night, after being stuck there for 3 days due to a blizzard, I went downstairs to use the bathroom and saw a "man" in the meeting hall. I told him he needed to be upstairs as it was past lights out. The "man" proceeded to walk towards me, and went right thru me floating up the stairs. My whole body went cold. I never went to the bathroom or downstairs alone again........ Doubt these stories??!!! Spend a night there and let me know..... Many tortured souls still roam the halls of this hospital.... Underground tunnels are soooo creepy also.....

AnonymousVisiter	Unfortunately all the old houses that lined Livingston St that were owned by the state have been torn down within this past year. Many of the tunnels were rumored to lead to those houses. The story goes that the doctors and nurses that worked there lived in those houses, but they closed off most of the tunnels for safety reasons after a few patients tried to escape. I don't know the validity of the stories, but that's what I have been told.

AnonymousVisiter	I live not too far from the hospital. One of the more interesting things is the history of what this place use to be. The houses along Livingston Street are gone. Actually, I watched these homes which could have been so beautiful long ago, become run down to the point that weather conditions over the years finally took their toll. The buildings can be seen from this street as well as East Street. This place whether housing patients or not, should be preserved by the state as it does have a significant historical value.

My uncle also works there, he has been head of security for many years so i visited that place often. My aunt and uncle have both told me many creepy stories about the hospital and it freaked me out big time going there when i was a kid. I will tell you now, that place is freakin HAUNTED!!!

AnonymousVisiter TENNESSEE US	I have worked on these grounds (in 2 of the treatment facilities on campus) for years and have never had my own creepy experience but have been told by many of the clients that the strangest things happen at night...hearing movement on the abandoned 2nd floor, feeling of someone sitting on their chest, feeling/or seeing someone sitting on the edge of the bed. If there are ghosts here they do a good job of staying clear of staff lol.

AnonymousVisiter - -	Working as an EMT, I've brought many patients here. Every time I've been here, I've always had a weird feeling. I've also lived in Tewksbury since I was 9 and have driven around here many times. It just has a creepy and sad feeling to it. Walking the halls always gave me a feeling of needing to get out.

AnonymousVisiter - -	Living in Tewksbury for most of my life, I have been able to learn a great deal about the history of the Hospital through a few of the members of the historical society including articles reporting gruesome conditions and treatments of patients. It would be no wonder that there are unsettled souls if people were being skinned alive... My first, and last, visit to the Hospital was to visit my friend's mother. I remember a general feeling of uneasiness and marveled at the insides of the building, the history of it. I could not shake the feeling of being followed wherever we walked. As for my friend, she was consistently in the hospital visiting her mother from the ages of 11-16, and she had stories about elevators seizing, accompanied by strange noises and voices. Just being anywhere around the Hospital grounds, there is an odd aura whether you are as close as the driveway, or halfway up Livingston Street.
