Location Description:
The oldest legible date on a grave marker is 1756: however, many of the grave sites are much older. Many earlier graves are simply covered with cypress slabs, shells, or brick. The cemetery was deeded to the town of Beaufort in 1731. There are many strange graves at the cemetary as well. There is a soilder that is buried standing up so that he could salute his king even in death. Captain Burns, a privateer and Captain of the Snap Dragon, is also buried here and his head stone has one of the cannons from his ship ontop of it. Not far from him is a little girl who did not make the voyage home. When she died he captain of the ship placed her body in a keg of rum, and she was buried inside of it once they made port in Beaufort. Her grave is marked with a simple cypress marker. Children and adults alike leave toys and trinkets on her grave for her to play with. The cemetary is open for tours, and maps can be obtained from the historical assiociation. And yes it is haunted!
