Location Description:
Local legend has it that the city of Norman will never be struck by a tornado because it was built on an Indian burial ground. If you remember the big tornado in May of 1999 not one bit of Norman was touched, while neighboring Moore was hit extremely hard.

Have lived in Normana long time - never heard that. I have heard that the river has something to do with it. But then, maybe it`s just luck.

Every town in OK has that legend! And every town in KS where I grew up. My friend told me that same legend about her hometown of Bartlesville. I told her tornadoes will hit wherever the conditions are favorable. Don`t trust an urban legend. That weekend B-ville was hit by a huge twister, and her sister was almost killed. When she returned to work, she said, "I guess you were right!"

Ok if this legend is true then why is our only grocery store GONE because of a TORNADO!!!! I live in norman I go to School at Little Axe our entire Grocery store is gone along with a couple of houses and some churchs. This all the cause of a TORNADO!!! Our school's football field also got hit and our bleachers are missing. I saw the tornado!!

My hometown of Tuttle has the same legend. I've lived here since 1977, and as far as I know, a tornado has never touched down in the city limits. Many twisters have come up Highway 92 from the Chickasha area, and they always veer west toward Union City or east toward Bridgecreek, Blanchard, or Newcastle (as the May 3rd, 1999 tornado did). I'm not claiming the reason is because of an ancient indian burial ground, or not...It could be the way the hills and valleys around the town are formed...but it is very interesting, anyway.
