Location Description:

One of the best known haunted places in the U.S., this plantation located between New Orleans and Natchez MS is now an inn. The primary spirit here is that of Chloe, a slave who had worked in the main house. After many warnings about her habit of eavesdropping, Chloe listened at the door one time too many. Mr. Woodruffe, owner of the plantation, had her left ear cut off as punishment. Thereafter, Chloe wore a green turban to hide the wound. When Mr. Woodruffe was away, Chloe baked one of his two daughters a birthday cake laced with oleander, a plant with effects similar to arsenic. The girls and their mother died. It could have been revenge, but the general view taken is that she hoped to make the girls sick, and then nurse them back to health thus getting back into the family`s good graces, and guaranteeing a household assignment. People have seen Chloe, and also the two young girls. The Sterlings, who lived at the Myrtles next, had terrible luck there. Their son was killed in the dining room over a gambling debt, and their 8 year old daughter died of yellow fever. Their son-in-law was shot on the front porch and died halfway up the main stairs, trying to reach his wife. A woman crying there on the stairs has been heard, as well as footsteps that go up and stop. Some guests are greeted at the gate by a surly caretaker who they later learn has been dead since 1927! Doors open and close, conversation comes from empty rooms, and unoccupied rocking chairs rock. Some of the ghosts have shown up in photos taken by guests. The inn has eleven guest rooms.

YES! The Myrtles Plantation lives up to the hype. Guests who stay overnight are not permitted to go into the building after dark (except to their rooms.) A tour is given during the day, but the only thing that visitors are allowed to photograph inside is the haunted mirror. On my visit I experienced some amazing phenomena, and recorded EVP of a man asking, "Are there any children?"
There is a sense of forboding here, and this is one of the few places that I felt uneasy sleeping in. Was in the old "Eye of the Storm" room and it is spooky.
I was told that the parking lot covers an old Indian gravesite.

My mother stayed the night. She pulled back the sheets and saw a blood spot appear out of thin air. The owner has many pictures of spirits. Very much a haunted place

Not forboding to me, but still HAUNTED! I got some great Photographic evidence while I was there. www.myspace/sirholland.com for pics. Oh and you can go into the main house after dark. You need to know someone with a room in there. We stayed in three different rooms.

The ghost story about this place is all lies!  Go to www.prairieghosts.com and scroll to the bottom to read the actual historical research of the place.  There was NEVER a slave who poisoned a birthday cake or someone who died on the stairs or anything else they want you to believe.  It may be haunted, but not from the fairy tales they spin to drum up business.

If you look into the mirror, you see faces and hands imprisoned in it, and even if it is changed, still they appear.I will get some pics to prove it.

i went there when i was about 12 years old, i fainted suddenly in the dining room of the inn. after sitting out the rest of the tour, my family and i went to lunch in the town and i found out i lost only one earring on my left ear, the same side where chloe's ear was chopped off, and i just noticed this a couple months back when discussing this to a friend.

We stayed here a few years ago. We stayed in the room at the top of the stairs. Very nice Bed & Breakfast, but no ghosts, no haunted feelings, no sightings, and nothing showed up in our pictures. We did get to walk around the house after dark because of the room we stayed in. Took pictures all over the place and saw nothing. Still a nice place to visit, though.
