Pythian Home
Lafayette, In 47902

County: Tippecanoe
WebSite: None

It is an old Nursing Home where many of the people who lived there died. There are many things that happen in there from lights turning on unexpectedly, to hearing footsteps, and even feeling something brush up against you. One of the stories are, there was a murder in on of the bathrooms. When the body was taken out, three women went in and cleaned it up. One of the women new the girl that was murdered and she went back to pay her respects. When she walked into the room, she found exactly as it was before they started cleaning. Now around the time of the anniversary of the girl's murder, all the gore returns. There still is no use cleaning it up. It still comes back.

I have lived in Lafayette my entire life and have have been inside it a lot. I worked, from the very beginning, on the haunted mansion that was held in the building for several years until it was closed down due to the excessive bat and bird droppings that were making people sick. The first year we went in to clean up and start constructing the props, which it really didn't need, we spent long hours, at night in that creepy building. We would be in different parts of the building painting, cleaning or building walls or props and would hear fotsteps, mumbling and scraping of the walls and floors. This is a TRUELY haunted place. Our local radio station did a promo stunt as a grand opening thing by spending the whole night inside, when they came out in the morning, they couldn't get the front door to open and had to have the door removed from its hinges to get it open, there was nothing wrong with the door. unfortunately, it is getting close to being torn down, because it is owned by the Lafayette school corp. and it costs a fortune to heat the place. If you have any more questions about the place, you can e-mail me at crazyfireman119@yahoo.com

I also have lived in Lafayette all my life and i believe that the Pythian Home is a beautiful structure. Its such a shame that the greedy school corp. couldn't put at least some of the earnings back into the place. I know with all the business it would get that it had to of made enough.

I must agree with you totally on that one!! They had all this money donated to them so that they could build a new football feild and music center but could not take any of that money to fix up this beautiful building!! I think that they jeff students should hold a fundraiser to try to earn enough money to fix it up!!! When the building was first built it was all donated money there has never been a loan takin out to do anything to this building!! It is an incredible place that deserves to be remodled!!

The buliding was condemed which why they couldnt restore it plus to hte people saying they should have taken money from the football field or music wing THEY CANT. The money was donated for those perpouses it would be illigal if they took money from it. Learn youre facts. Also I was inside and we have seen that little girl in a dress inside AND by the pit by the YMCA across the street.

I would love to see the Pythian Home restored. I went to Jeff, graduated in 2004, and wish they would put the same concern into the Pythian Home as they are in redoing a school that doesn't need to be redone. As for the rumor about the two teens dying from the bird and bat droppings, it's not true. It was a teen and his mother who got sick, but made full recoveries.

i agree. im a current student at jeff and i think they could spare some money to fix the place up. it shouldnt be torn down when they could afford to fix it up.

i too am from lafayette, there have been ghost hunters in the pythian, my brother was writing for the booster at the time and spent the night with them in the place. He said it was creapy as hell, that why we joined the igt(Indiana Ghost Tracker). and no, the two kids didn't die in the building, they were both in my grade at jeff and graduated in 2006 with me. They sued the school corp for around a million dollars and won.

i used to work at indiana pythian home 1984 to 1986, i started out as a cna there, i did several times seen weird things happen. i was stuck up on 2nd floor all night and was the only one on that floor, i felt some one touch my shoulder, i turned around and there was no one there. it happened again so i got scared and called the night nurse to come up to floor, and she said she couldnt that she already knew what was going on. so i know the place is haunted. after all these yrs, i sure would love to go back in. please let me know if you find out how and email me back thanks

It's a shame that Bob Rorhman couldn't have donated his million dollars to the clean up of the home instead of to Jeff High school. Preserveing the Lafayette area is more important, But hey you get more attention giving to the school than anything else

I am a graduate of Jefferson High myself. I graduated in 1980. As you all know someone can tell a story and by the time it gets back to you it is so distorted.

I lived on Earl Ave. just behind Jeff high. The Indiana Ghost Trackers have already been inside of the Pithian Home.Yes it is Haunted. While there footsteps were heard, voices were heard (Get out of hell), some even said that  the boiler room would move locations on its own.         You could walk on only one floor and find yourself on a completely different floor.

As for the bloody bathroom I personally have no knowledge of this supernatual activity. How ever It is an interesting story. Thank you.

I would Like to know how I can find out about an investigation that was done on South 6th street in Lafayette about 5 1/2 to 6 years ago it was done at my home and before I could get the report the computer crashed. If you have any rememberance of the  investigation it would be very much appreitiated if I could get any information.

I remember as a kid, Live people lived there! When it was a nursing home I used to go with my girlfriend to visit her grandfather. I knew nothing about the rumors of it being haunted, but let me tell you, I could not wait to get out of that place. The hair on my arms would stand on end. A very eary feeling, almost like some one was breathing down the back of my neck. The room was small a tiny bed an over head light and a couple of chairs in the room was all. The walls were painted a gooey green color, paint peeling away, Tile floors that were cracked, and cockroaches everywhere. I have been by since, walked around it, one day We knocked on the door, and something strange happend, a gust of wind came up. Was a calm sunny day. i still get that feeling of some one watching me, and I am not the only one. Its a very scary place where the dead still walk!

I went to Jeff High School and worked in the Haunted Mansion. It was honestly the most terrifying place I have ever been in. In broad daylight me and 3 other people saw 2 large solid wood doors (probably 8 feet by 4 feet) openn right in front of us. Also there were certain rooms in the mansion we were forbidden to go into for threats of expulsion. The psychiatric wing was strictly forbidden (constant screaming could be heard from that wing) and so was a room upstairs that was nailed shut with a cross of boards. It would open by itself even ripping nails out of the door. The bloody bathroom was from what I had seen a myth. But it was still the absolute scariest thing I have ever been a part of. I would love to go investigate it but the clean up would cost millions and LSC wants money for everything but that (even though it pulled in around 120,000 in one weekend.

I think all of you people watch too many scary movies!  I use to work as a nurse in 1977 1978 (on the 2nd floor mostly of the older part) it was known as the dementia unit.  Alzheimers they call it now.  I was the only nurse there on many night shifts.  I never experienced anything except when bats would get loose from the attic and we had to wrap our hair in towels. The place was full of many very sweet elderly people, and I have a lot of very good memories there.  I would also like to get back in to reminise.  The architecture is gorgeous and such a shame it was not preserved.

i go to jeff high school and i seriously think that sunnyside middle school is haunted or something! because when i used to go there which was like 3 years ago me and my best friend were walking in the halls and we heard someone say come here but we ignored it. the next day we went in to the bathroom and the lights shut off and he door shut so she turned on her cellphone light and we opened the door and there was nobody around anywhere! we were scared. but this wasnt the first time we expierenced this about two weeks before this we walked by the elavator because we were late for science and the elevator opened up all by itself! that was weird because u have to have a key in order to open it up! one of my teachers told me that the school was built on top of this old cemetary where soldiers were burried. i have so many more scary stories so if u wanna know more u can send me a message at brendaverduzco00@hotmail.com bye :)

I would like to like to say something about the Pythian Home. I worked there for many years as a techie for the Haunted Mansion. The place is very haunted I have many stories of what took place there. I was also with the Indiana Ghost Trackers when the spent the night there and what they found was pretty cool. I spent many night in the house and sometime I was there all by myself and I heard and saw stuff that was pretty creepy. I was doing some work in the basement in the jail cell room and thats where the safe with 3 wheels was located and when I was in there the safe was moving by itself and it wieghs about 300 lbs and it would pop up in different rooms everyday. If you want more information about the Pythian Home you can e-mail me at jhole66@yahoo.com

Im from Lafayette IN and Im 15 and truth be told, on saturday february 21st i went to the Pythian Home and I was taking pictures and once I got the 10th picture my moms car died, I was so scared and yet I think the building is sooooo beautiful and I think Lafayette School Corp. should think about how much work was put into building it and how beautiful it is and how crazily amazing it is to go around it and get alittle scared but to have to and cherish those memories......I really love the Pythian Home, even though I got as scared as I did.....its still the best place in the world that I myself, my sister and mom have ever been to, please Indiana speak up and dont let them tear down this beautiful and memorable building...

My dad and his 2 brothers grew up in the Pythian home.  Way back it used to be 1/2 old people's home and 1/2 orphanage.  My dad was born in 1915, so this was a looong time ago.  As kids and even up until maybe 1985, the orphans that had lived there had a yearly reunion and met at the home.  I remember going every year from a very early age.  We used to go in and visit with the old people -- they were no longer allowed to house kids and old people in the same home.  It was always kind of creepy, but we never saw or heard any paranormal activity.

Two years ago I made an off hand remark to my parents about visiting my great grandmother when she was staying at the Pythian Home. They questioned my supposed memory of visiting her. They were both very disturbed when I told them details of her room. Unknown to me, my great-grandmother died when I was two months old and they had taken me there as an infant. That place is DEFINITELY haunted.

When I was seventeen I worked as a nursing assistant there. All the things and more that you have heard about are very true. I was frightened all the time, for I worked 3-11pm. A lot of the paitents were just as scared and begged thier family memebers to get them out, to no avail, thier families thought it was just homesickness, well I can assure you it was not. I loved that old place though. I has a certain appeal to it.

For a Senior Project (in 2003) a classmate of mine got to spend the night in the Pythian Home and, let me tell you, he had some great evidence.

I've had personal experiences there myself, as I'd worked the Haunted Mansion several years.  I think the freakiest thing to have happened to me is I was walking back to the make-up area for a break, and on my way a person in costume walked up to me on a stairwell, put a ribbon around my neck and walked on.  I walked up a few steps, then looked back and he was gone.  I didn't see him that night at closing or any other time.

My boyfriend and i just went to it today and right when we walked on the beginning of the sidewalk we felt cold and we had problems breathing. We have both been able to see and talk to ghosts since we were 3 nobody believes us but we aren't lying. When we were there today we walked by it and he told me all about it and when we went to leave the right side of the building he was like did you see that? and then i turned around and we both saw a little girl standing at the corner of the building just staring at us and then she disappeared. We both were weirded out but we still stayed there and as we walked on we got to the front of the building and as we walked we saw a window just start fogging up and then something wrote two different words and neither one of us knew what it meant so we just walked on. And on the left side of the building where the big metal like wall things we saw things that looked like little kid handprints and scratch marks and shoe prints. Let's just say we were both wondering.
