Please at least get your facts straight before going all goofy about this.
I live in Lake Zurich, about 50 yards off Cuba, 300 yds from Rainbow, and travel it daily.
There are 2 Cuba roads - East Cuba runs from Mchenry Rd in the town of Long Grove, goes west as a tight hilly two lane, no shoulder, heavily wooded roadway up to Quentin Road in Lake Zurich. Its noted as one of the most scenic drives in Lake County. Due to the hills and lack of cross roads, young people often drive recklessly on here, getting their cars airborne at the hillcrests, and dragracing. There have been several fatalities, mostly drunk and reckless drivers hitting trees on the shoulders after losing control jumping a hill.
West Cuba runs from Quentin Rd, west to its end at Route 14 in Barrington (might be Fox River Grove, not sure where the border is). Its also a two lane wooded road, but not as densely packed as East Cuba.
The railroad tracks are west of Ela Road, they are not abandoned, in fact get considerable use. The school bus crash happened in Fox River Grove, on a different set of tracks. The Cuba crossing is in the middle of a forest preserve, so in the fall your car is always getting pelted with leaves in any kind of a wind, which is probably where the myth of the handprints on cars comes from.
There was no hospital nor asylum anywhere along that road that I've ever heard of.
The small wooden bridge is about 3 miles east of the RR tracks, on East Cuba. The noises there come from the neighboring home to the west of the bridge, who has an extensive collection of metal wind chimes hanging in their yard. That plus the rippling brook under the bridge would account for the noises.
There is an old cemetary, White Cemetary, in Barrington on West Cuba. This portion of the road is hilly and wooded, so distant car headlights will dissappear and reappear. Its residential to the south, so cars turning off Cuba would look like they dissapperar. Also, this area is lowlying (Flint Creek basin) and often foggy.
There is one persistant rumor about female hitchikers thumbing down rides along this stretch, near the cemetary, usually a female will flag down a driver, who stops, then cannot find anyone. I've never actually met anyone who had such an encounter, its always been a friend-of a friend of a coworker's cousin etc...
There are numerous old farm houses along this road, most are now rebuilt as modern structures. The groups/fires are probably coming from whats now the Long Grove Country Club, at the east end of Cuba at McHenry Rd. (think kids camping out with campfires). Several of the old farmhouses were burned down over the past several years, several of them by LZ Fire dept as training exercises. Several were bought out by the Forest preserve district to expand Cuba Marsh Preserve, who removed the buildings as restoration of the preserve.
Well, it sure looks like you’ve got trouble, my friend.
Right here, I say, right here in Deer Park.
Why sure, I’ve driven an Oldsmobile Cutlass
Certainly mighty proud to say,
I’m always mighty proud to say it.
I consider the hours I spend in a muscle car are golden.
But I say that any boob can leave a car in Tomah and hitch a ride on a Greyhound,
And I call that sloth –
The first big step on the road to degrada- I say, first – some passed-on Copey from Ma, then a B in a B.
And the next thing you know your car’s got two broken doors and a dead engine,
Haunting Cuba Rd, scaring all the locals.
Make your blood boil? Well I should say!
Now, folks, let me show you what I mean:
You’ve got one, two, three, four, five, six shares of corn to sell today.
That’s corn with a capital C, and that rhymes with G, and that stands for Ghoul.
You’ve got trouble!
(oh we’ve got trouble)
Right here in Deer Park
(right here in Deer Park)
With a capital T and that rhymes with G and that stands for Ghoul
(that stands for ghoul)
You surely got trouble
(we’ve surely got trouble)
Look out for a ghost in a shirt that says “Sophomores Rule”.
