Old Insane Asylum
Wichita Falls, Tx 76302

County: Wichita County
WebSite: None

You can hear water dripping in the basement although the place has been vacant and no utilities for over 30 years. When up on the second floor we heard heavy footsteps coming up the stairs, but no one else was in the building. Also if you are very quite on a quite night, can heard the faint sound of old printers and machines running.

If they are referring to the State Hospital the buildings don`t have basements. Can`t think of anywhere else they might be referring to.

My boyfriends uncle,Gilbert Rios, bought the old insane asylum. After completly remodeling the entire building,it remained vacant for 1 year.My boyfriend,Richard Rios, moved in for 3 months.Needless to say,the place is haunted, and there is a basement with 2 old coal furnaces in it.The building is now vacant, but is beautiful inside, with 3 bedrooms on the second floor, each containing about 15 windows in each one,a kitchen each on the first and second floor,2 bathrooms on each floor,a living room,a reading room and a game room, and dont forget the basement, there is also a stairway leading to the roof, which is flat.We would sit up there until the sun came up.The place is awsome to hang out at,but to live in,NOT!

This used to be a hot spot for Halloween until it was bought and remodeled. The pink coloring and the removal of the overgrown vegetation just took the scare out of it.

I just moved to Wichita Falls and am an avid geocacher and ghost "follower" One of the geocaches I did over the weekend involved the F.S. White Sanitarium.

It`s located at the corner of California and Olen roads, and opened in 1926 under the direction of Frank S. White, a man who had been superintendent at the state asylum in Austin before the turn of the century. He first advocated providing a non-institutionalized lifestyle for his patients to diminish the effects of the asylum itself on their sanity. He ran the facility for just five years before retiring for health reasons.

In 1939, the building was abandoned after it was damaged due to severe flooding. The building remained a local haunt for daring teens until 2002, when Gilbert Rios, who was 70 years old at the time and retired, purchased the building for $15,000, a measly price for such a vast estate. His purpose for buying the asylum was to repair and refurbish it into an apartment complex. The building now possesses a fresh coat of pink paint, a well-manicured lawn, and attractive landscaping.

There were so many tales of horror associated with the asylum that most investors wouldn`t touch it. A group of Houston ghost hunters contacted Rios in August, 2002, requesting a visit to the asylum. They set up shop in the White building, monitoring it for any signs of supernatural activity. The results were inconclusive at that time. One MSU student told a tale of high school friends discovering abandoned manacles in the asylum`s basement. Local residents tell stories of ghosts seen playing cards, as well as unexplained screams heard, coming from the direction of the asylum, in the dark hours of the night.

The property is currently for sale for $350,000.00 It was beautifully restored inside and out, but has been on the market since March of this year. Haunted? Perhaps :) I did not go at night time, but I did get a very strange vibe off an upstairs window in the back of the house, like someone was watching me. I would love to go back at night time. Perhaps I can get the real estate agent to let me in sometime during the night! :)

Me & A group of friends along with my step mother, who`s a real estate agent, went to the asylum last night. We have lots of pictures with orbs in them and one picture that was taken of a friend that has white mist behind her that distorted the picture & the look of a distorted face near her left shoulder. That place IS haunted. We stayed for about 2 hours. I would love for the owner to complete the Bed & Breakfast it was going to be, so i could stay a full night.

During the tour me and my friend, Krystin, slipped away from the group. It seemed that the group scared away the orbs and nothing was happening with a lot of people around. We went up to the second floor and sat on the couch in one of the bedrooms. No flashlights or anything on, just my camera. We both sat in the middle so there was room on either side of us to sit. on my right i swear i felt a freezing cold hand hold on to the crook of my arm. My arm went numb after a little bit and I started shaking, but i didnt move and the coldness stayed only on the one spot. It wasnt a feeling like get out, but it felt more comforting. I dont know how to explain it fully, but we took pictures next to me and there wasnt any orbs
however I was sitting close to the corner of the room and there was an orb in that corner.

We then adventured into another bedroom and immediately felt a cold rush over us, this room was much colder than the rest of the house. Krystin sat on the couch & i took pictures, but when i moved behind the couch it got much colder than it was before and i felt a sense that i shouldnt be in there. Like a feeling of dread came over me & i felt frozen as my whole body stiffed up. At that same time Krystin told me we needed to get out of there. So we left that room & went down to the basement. We started walking towards the room & found a cold spot by the furnaces & stopped because we had that feeling that we shouldnt go in there. So we left there & went back upstairs and went back to the room where i felt like someone was holding my arm and sat in the same places. Again I felt that hand in the crook of my arm. We then left there and went back to the other bedroom where i froze up. We shut the door this time though & went back to the center of the room by the couch. Got cold feeling again and then Krystin froze up and said her back felt like it was "curling". Therefore good time to leave. Went back downstairs to the 1st floor & met with the group. They were about ready to leave, but my friend walked over to the piano and noticed something she didnt before. There was a pamplet half-way under the piano cover. She pulled it out & it read "Your Suffering Is Almost Over". Yes this defiantely freaked us out. The whole thing was over suffering. We then decided to take one last trip up stairs. We got to the 2nd set of stairs and sto

White Sanitarium sits on the corner of California St and Olen....behind the Flying J
We went out there today and I am sure there is a lot of history in that house.
I don`t believe it will ever sale for anywhere close to $350,000. I wouldn`t even think anyone would pay $100,000...it is a really badly kept area of Wichita Falls. Not only that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to the place.

i`ve been out to the white sanitarium. it was beautiful. it was summer of `06, july or august i`d say.. without knowing any of the history, just that it was a former sanitarium, i didn`t get a negative vibe at all. it looked like it had been remodeled as some kind of community apt. i`ve lived in wichita for close to 26 years now and the first i`d heard of this place was then.. no one i talked to could give good directions to it. california and olen.. but california stops and restarts.. so it`s tricky getting finding it, even when you`re local to the area. so.. without knowing the background, in the hot summer afternoon, there was nothing scary about this place aside from possibly having the police arrive because we were tresspassing. the only slightly disturbing thing about it was a bench of six grade-school style cafeteria lunch seats, red, orange, & blue alternating.. the place wasn`t big and the bench was outside the building, in the back, metal bent and aging from the years and surely the weather. you know that the seats got regular use.. and the thought of the incapacitated, incapabale, or insane huddled around the small table was distubing. we took pictures.. no orbs.. no fuzzy images.. nothing. texas in the summer. there was a feeling of accomplishment in finding the place and it`s age showed in the outdoor light fixtures and a small concrete fountain.

i like the idea of having a haunted asylum and the small town stories.. but really, nothing too awful about it. perhaps if it hadn`t been recently remodeled.. or if we had in fact stayed out there at night or it wasn`t hot.. whatever and what not.

much of what i know about it i just read on this site. informative.. i`ll be sure to pass the lore on to friends, co-workers, family.. if it stays over grown and vacant long enough perhaps it will once again become the creepy local sanitarium i`d pictured it as..

i`d love to revisit the place and explore the history a bit more. if someone local runs across this and has any current connection to the place pass along the info.. i`m not a user to this site but i`m on myspace @ www.myspace.com/ashesontop

Oh wow. Someone bought and remodeled that old place? I haven't been there since high school. Some buddies took me out there to scare the pants off of me. It work pretty well i guess. Interesting to see this have so many comments. Didn't know anyone remembered that Wichita Falls existed. Can't wait to return to the town and check this site out again.

This place was bought by a guy named Gilbert Rios and it is now back on the market. I believe it's priced at aroune 350,000. Which is too steep of a price speaking it's in such a bad side of town. Granted the structure is remarkable and it's beautiful inside but not worth that much money. I was given a tour of this place and I did not pick up on any bad vibes. Well the only place I did pick up on a vibe at all was the window on the balcony and we couldn't open the door because a nest of hornets live there now. Other than that nothing abnormal happened and we did not catch any mist or orbs or apperations in pictures..I say it's hocus pocus but who knows what lingers at night.

Went in there today with a few friends. Naturally there was a "no trespassing" sign stuck on the front of the fence. I've known about it for about 4 years and i've been wanting to go in it since the first day time I saw it. So after taking my best friend and my cousin by for 2 days, we just had to go in it. So we went today around 630- daylight of course- and climbed through a broken window. Of course it was creepy. It was still completely furnished, and surprisingly clean. There was a bed that was unmade and it looked like someone had just slept there. It was really surprising to me how much stuff was in there. The house was actually quite awesome. It would be a sweet place to move into if it wasn't such a creepfest. We went downstairs and sure enough, what looked like meth-making-materials were laying out on a kitchen cabinet. There was a bowl of white powder and a set of used looking gloves and spoons that had brown stains. It wouldn't surprise me if someone had been staying in there considering the vacancy and all of the furniture. We didn't go into the basement because it was so dark and we didn't have a flashlight, but we looked down through the entrance. I swear we heard something shuffle down there. Now whether it was a rat, or a person, or a ghost, we heard something move down there. We went back downstairs and climbed back through the window and down the consequential ladder leading up to and left. I would like to re-visit it. It was definitely a weird feeling being in there considering the story behind it, all imagination aside. I think we will go back there soon with new people.

I have pictures and videos of this place from around 2001 before it was remodeled. This place was nuts. The first time, was with the video camera and the second time was with the still camera. If people are still interested in seeing these things I will see what I can do to get the film and pics into a digital format... LMK

my sister and i went out there last night. it was dark. i didnt even know that there was an abandoned insane asylum in town until she told me about it when we were on our way to witches gate. we were coming up california road and we saw it. i wanted to throw a fit and she actually screamed for those of you who have said that you dont get any bad vibes out there, you are crazy. we parked in front of it. i took one glance at the two windows on the top floor in the front in the middle and it seemed like there was someone peering out of the dark window, pushing the curtain aside. same for the other window, excet that window seemed like there were more than just one person staring at us. april started to roll down the window. i absolutely could not look at the place again. i started feeling this tightness in my legs and arms and neck that i havent felt before and i snapped at her to roll the damn thing back up. we left and as freaked out as we both were, she wanted to go back. she said something was drawing her to it. let me tell you, nothing good ever comes out of that. you may feel like there is no harm that could be done, but i promise. its not a good idea to go back when you feel something like that. for some reason humans are drawn to ppl and places that they should never be around.

I don't know what it is about this site, but 2 nights ago, I couldn't post a single comment, and today I get a double post that I wasn't even ready to submit it yet. Then, I was unable to edit them. So, I'm sorry for the mess. Oh, well...to continue: ALMOST EVERYONE IN TOWN KNOWS THIS PLACE. The guy we asked wrote directions & drew a little map. It wasn't very far. As stated in some posts above, the site is located on the corner of California & Olen. What no one told me is that this is a residential area! Houses & people everywhere! It was late afternoon/early evening. People were having a bbq RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THE PLACE (Dec. in TX is mild, & that day was rather warm. I didn't need a jacket!)! Since there were so many people milling through the neighborhood, we didn't go inside, but I did find a dog jawbone just behind the building that I took home for my sister as a souvenir. Haunted or not, it was a cool little place. I wanted to go back, but now that it's renovated...It has lost a little of the dilapidated charm it had, at least to me.

I went to the Asylum didn't even know it was there and remembered as a child my grandparents took us out there.Somebody remodled it and it is beautiful but you can't go on the property all I know its up for sale. The front door is gated and there is another door on the side that is gated. Right behind a old statue is an old washer sitting there looks more harmless but would love to go in the basement is flooded due to all the rain we've had here in the last 3yrs. No it is located on California and Oden road there is alot of people who live around it and accross the street there is also a bussiness there to get to it you have to go to wintrost rd get on the access next to highway do all the way down turn right on California Street and right on Oden it is not part of the state hospital nor is it close to it. There is signs warning folks not to go on property they will be arested so would not advice it but would love to buy the property it is beautiful but not much land and it is being taken care of

The person that seen it well that was a long time ago cause it looks pretty raggdey not alot of property small lot behind it is a ditch that I'm sure took up alot of the land and it is pink but in bad shape just a beautiful building. Don't see that it is listed think the city of wichita falls has it now. The basement is flooded due to the flood we had here a few yrs back but you can see it from the road by the flying J there is one road you can turn off and see the back part. The people around there watch the place pretty close oh when my grandparents took me out there in the 60's there was a grave yard where the ditch is now they moved all the bodies.

A year ago a few friends and I decided to go visit a couple haunted "hot spots" around Wichita Falls one night whilst we were eating at a Denny's. After visiting Pinky's Cave (which none of us were rather impressed with) we drove over to the supposedly "haunted" Insane Asylum to see what the buzz was about. Before i go any further, I am a HUGE skeptic about anything super natural, I do not believe in ghosts or anything that is considered haunted, so I was expecting another experience that furthered my beliefs that the super natural is utter nonsense. We parked the car in a near by neighborhood so that we wouldn't seem to be trespassing and wouldn't have to deal with our very best friends, the cops. In a line we snuck over to the empty building, practically shimmying on the side of the drainage ditch that hugged the land the Asylum was built on. We then left the drainage ditch and crawled over to the fence that surrounded the back end of the Insane asylum (being in east texas the crickets and cicadas were terribly loud, and easily stifled our clunky footsteps). leaping over the fence we could see the entrance to the cellar which had a considerable amount of heavy garbage blocking the door. Also easily visible with the handy flashlight i had brought was the energy panel (or whatever it is you call it), there was no electricity on at all, so there was no hope of turning on any lights inside or at least have some air-conditioning (by the way this is in early august, so even though it was at night the temperature was still extremely hot). While the rest of the group unloaded the junk off of the cellar doors I had a look around the outer portions of the building. Most of the windows were boarded up, or at least had considerable amounts of dust blocking the view of the inside, however there was one window you could see into. What I assumed what was supposed to be erie and frightening was what looked like a ripped white dress floating in mid air, taking a closer look it was just a bed sheet or a curtain resting on a ladder- Score one for me, this was looking to be a boring night. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that there was a crib in the same room that still had its mattress on it, which wouldn't be too strange except i was led to believe this was a psychiatric ward for adults. I heard a shout from the female in the group and i went back to see that they had just about everything off of the doors, waiting there I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach, like the feeling of drinking to much milk. The two other guys opened the doors and immediately the crickets and cicadas went dead silent, scarier still we could feel a chilly breeze creeping out of the cellars entrance. It was merely an erie presence until it hit me, there was no electricity in the building and yet there is this almost freezing air blowing out of the inside, not muggy air that had been trapped in the cellar from the past winter (I'm not even sure that is possible) but this feeling that sent chills to you're very bones. Once I announced that the building had no electricity therefore it should be impossible for it to be this cold inside everyone froze stiff, and amongst the dead silence we heard a faint disturbance (that is truly the best way I can describe it, it was nothing I had ever heard before. It was close to the sound of a low humming, but it sounded like a song, it had a tempo and it notes yet it was so faint I would have thought I was imagining it if no one else had heard it). We all stood there gazing at the door, after a minute or so the sound began to come closer and we could hear dripping of water in a puddle. Then a splash. At that point we just ran, I ran as fast as my legs could handle, once we hit the car we all piled in and sped off in silence. though as we drove i could still faintly hear the song. and every once in awhile i still can, it raises the hairs on my neck when I think about it. That was my experience with the Insane Asylum. Lets just say I'm no longer sure where I stand with the supernatural.

It is funny how inconsistent most of the postings are on this website. My grandparents own White Asylum. I have been in it several times. It has been completely remodeled. New window in the entire building. There is some furniture left in it from past tenants that have not been removed. All the remnants from when it was an asylum are long gone. Their may be the presence of some former "residents" their but it is a lovely building and the scary factor is gone. Sorry kiddies go find another haunt.

I find it disrespectful of the KIDS that have been kicking in the door as of late and jimmying the locks and breaking in ... It may have past residents as you call them in it but it is a part of this towns history and if all the little wannabe ghost hunters and emo kids would wait till Halloween the real estate company that has it opens it to the public . I spoke with her today to let her know someone had kicked in the door she had mentioned it would be open this year for the public.   I would love to own it but my husband is a superstitious man and would have no part of it ..   That place is beautiful and stupid kids that hear stupid stories from there friends need to quit breaking in to it .. Just like witches gate its an old ranch home where a man and his brother were killed during a robbery ... Now its a place for the cows to graze and so called lil kids out there drawing pentagrams on the old fire place and throwing trash every where. I have been out there day and night after asking the land owner if I could and he allowed me in .     the only thing thats haunted is Claira cemetery because of the history.  I know more than enough about this town and surrounding towns to know whats true and whats not and what really is haunted or " occupied by the past "...  Sorry if any ones childish little feelers got hurt but the Old hospital and Witches Gate are both owned by someone and if it states stay  out try following the rules for once that man that owns the land where this so called witches gate is will shoot you dead for being on his land he will think nothing of it.   Kids need to go to the Historic district and do some research before giving in to hear say .   I have had two deaths in my home and honestly anyone that lived on my street has had at least one because this got mowed over in the tornado of 79  think about kiddos every piece of land you walk on may have animal or human remains under it doesn't make it haunted!

Does Mr. Rios still own the property?  I am a Paranormal Investigator ( Shadow Chasers ) and heve written to Mr. Rios seking his permission to investigate the building.

Ok obviously you have an interest in ghost hunting as much as others. Some people are going about seeing the building the wrong way i agree, but don't shut people down. It is there hobby, I enjoy seeing old properties because i have an interest in owning and also love to here stories others have said. BREAKING AND ENTERING IS WRONG!! totaly agree! Do research, but also dont put down people and their interests, Help them out give ideas!

My dad is the one that remodeled the building for Gilbert and he says he never heard nor saw anything to make him think it was haunted.

The building is now my family's home. We live here peacefully with former "residents". Occasionally we hear or see them, but most of the time it's quiet. For those of you that had a chance to see it prior to us moving in, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It is a beautiful piece of property and I am proud to call it home!

Does anyone know the name of the current owner of the property? I'm trying to investigate for a project for school.
